COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT

Keyboarding

Keyboarding is a required semester course. Mastery of the keyboard, touch-typing and letter-writing styles are the emphasis of the course. IBM compatible computers are used primarily for the instruction. (.5 credit)

Word Processing

Word Processing is an elective semester course emphasizing keyboard mastery and accuracy. The use of the word processing features of Microsoft Word will be explored. [Prerequisite: Keyboarding. Required for Office Practice] (.5 credit)

Consumer Education

Consumer Education is a one-semester required course; open to juniors and seniors. Emphasis is on budgeting, investments, working with loans and percents and other general business topics the consumer needs to know. (.5 credit)

Office Practice

Office Practice is an elective yearlong course. The emphasis of the course is on data base, word processing, calculating and transcribing. [Prerequisite: Word Processing. Office Practice and Accounting are offered in alternate years.] (.5 credit/semester)

Accounting

Accounting is a yearlong course in basic accounting principles as used in a service business and merchandising business. The course acquaints students with automated accounting systems and provides background instruction for advanced study in business administration or accounting. Open to juniors and seniors. [Prerequisite: Algebra I. Accounting and Office Practice are offered in alternate years.] (.5 credit/semester)

 

COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Desktop Publishing

This one semester course will make use of graphics and style formats to design flyers, advertisements, invitations, letterheads, etc. This class will also help students prepare and present papers and presentations. Other topics covered will include advanced word processing techniques. [Prerequisite: Word Processing] (.5 credit)

Computer Applications

This one semester course is designed to prepare students for the use of spreadsheet programs. EXCEL will be used to teach the use and role of spreadsheets in today's world. They are a valuable tool for students and are an important prerequisite for college freshman. [Prerequisite: Word Processing] (.5 credit)

Advanced Computer Applications

This one semester course will cover advanced spreadsheet and database software. This class will also use the presentation software PowerPoint to help students use a multi-media approach to projects and assignments. In addition, the class will use the internet for email, searching, and posting websites. [Prerequisite: Word Processing.](.5 credit)

 

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Pre-English

Pre-English is a yearlong course intended for freshmen who would benefit from additional support in reading, grammar, study skills, and basic composition. Entrance is based on placement test scores. (.5 credit/semester)

English I

English I is a required yearlong course with a twofold emphasis: language arts and literature. In the area of language arts, skills are strengthened in usage, mechanics, composition, and speech. The composition activities include sentence and paragraph construction, research activities, and creative writing opportunities. In the area of literature, poetry, drama, the novel, and the short story are studied in class, and some outside reading of novels is monitored/evaluated through book reports. (.5 credit/semester)

English II

English II is a required yearlong course following English I in the curriculum sequence. Literature and language arts are studied as an integrated whole, building on the concepts from English I. [Prerequisite: English I.] (.5 credit/semester)

English III

English III is a yearlong course required of most juniors. American literature from colonial times to the present is emphasized. Literary trends are presented as a reflection of American history. The course includes various composition activities, focusing on the essay, the research paper, and creative writing. [Prerequisite: English II] (.5 credit/semester)

Communications

In this semester course, through extensive use of a reading lab, the student improves his reading and study techniques. In addition, students review job-oriented writing pieces and basic writing and speaking procedures. [Prerequisite: Senior class standing or instructor consent.] (.5 credit)

Advanced Language Arts

Students experience the process of writing and draft a variety of compositions. The semester course provides for speech activities, book reviews, and a research essay. This is a key foundation course for successful college writing. [Prerequisite: senior class standing; English III; or instructor consent.] (.5 credit)

Advanced Literature

An elective semester course for juniors and seniors, the emphasis is on the craft of writing and reading literature. Students study the short story, poetry, and drama to understand the nature of man and to see more clearly the Christian's role in the world. Recommended for college prep. Open to juniors and seniors. [Prerequisite: English II; or instructor consent. (.5 credit)

Advanced/Creative Writing I
Advanced/Creative Writing II

These two elective semester courses, open to juniors and seniors, are taught in alternate years. Both electives may be chosen due to the individual nature of the course. A series of exploratory writing and thinking activities helps the student to examine himself and his role in the world. [Prerequisite: English II. (.5 credit)

The Novel

Through the study of the novel and other longer pieces of literature, this semester course emphasizes understanding the craft of writing and reading literature, exploring the nature of man, and determining the Christian’s role in the world. Recommended for college prep. Open to juniors and seniors. [Prerequisite: English II. ] (.5 credit)

Speech

Speech is a one semester elective open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The course is designed to teach proper speaking forms and techniques and to give opportunity to practice them through a wide variety of speeches. In addition, listening skills, discussion skills, and non-verbal communication are examined. [Prerequisite: English I. ] (.5 credit)

English for College I
English for College II

Intended for motivated and advanced students, this course will challenge students to read a variety of thought-provoking literature and to write analytical and critical responses. Recommended for college preparation and AP test candidates. [Prerequisite: Instructor consent] (.5 credit)

Independent Study

An elective semester course for seniors who need to pursue a course of study that is not available in the curriculum or available in their schedule. [Senior class standing and instructor permission required.] (.5 credit)

Journalism I

The study of journalistic writing, history, and application to the high school setting will be covered in this yearlong course. Student publications such as the school newspaper will be prepared in this course. [Prerequisite: English I and instructor consent.] (.5 credit/semester)

Journalism II

This course is a continuation of Journalism I and offers further opportunities for journalistic writing. Journalism II students will take leadership roles in the production of the school newspaper. [Prerequisite: Journalism I and instructor consent.] (.5 credit/semester)

Journalism III

This course is a continuation of Journalism II and offers further opportunities for journalistic writing. Journalism III students will take leadership roles in the production of the school newspaper. [Prerequisite: Journalism II and instructor consent.] (.5 credit/semester)
